Adventure Leadership Core Courses

 

ALPT100 Outdoor Adventure Education Theory, Philosophy, and Professions - This is the introductory course to the professional field of recreation and outdoor studies. Particular attention will be given to the historical foundations of leisure, recreation, and play; the emergence of outdoor recreation in American and global society; the roles of public (federal, state, and local) and private (for- and not-for-profit) providers of outdoor recreation; current issues and trends in the field; and career opportunities and professionalism. Hours: 3

 

ALPT151 Outdoor Leadership - This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge to organize and lead outdoor activities. Includes leadership styles, liability, program promotion, planning, safety, and environment impact. Practical experiences are included. Hours: 3.

 

ALPT152 Outdoor Leadership Practicum - This course provides extended practical application of the concepts developed in ALPT 151. Hours: 2

 

ALPT160 Fundamentals of Environmental Education - This course examines the growth and developmental aspects of adventure programming focusing on the adventure education movement in America, including history and foundations, models, theories, participation patterns, outcomes/benefits, sponsoring agencies, public and private resources, salient literature, contemporary issues, trends, and professionalization of a discipline. Hours: 3

 

ALPT250 Program Planning, Administration, and Management - This course provides a foundational understanding of program planning and leadership, which includes delivery, needs assessments, group management, participant requirements, participant physical and emotional safety; human development, special needs, advertising, and evaluation. Specific attention will be given to the history and development of leadership theory and practice. Topics range from leadership styles, models, levels of communication, conflict management, group interaction, to leader competency and moral and ethical leader practices. During the lab portions of this course, student will gain hands-on experience delivering programs. Hours: 3

ALPT270 Experiential Facilitation and Adventure-Based Learning Techniques - This course introduces the student to adventure teambuilding for the purpose of heightening both intra and inter-personal relationships. The course evaluates the art and science behind discovering social and aggective attributes about self and others. Hours: 2

 

ALPT280 Wilderness Ethics: Land use and Risk Management - This course presents a powerful tool for understanding the challenges facing wilderness in the United States today. Beginning with the premise that land management must be informed by a well-developed wilderness ethic, the curriculum delves into some of the thorniest problems in wilderness ethics, exploring them in clear, straightforward language: What is wilderness? Why should it be protected? Do animals and trees have rights? When should wilderness concerns trump individual priorities? Hours: 3

 

ALPT290 Final Project/Extended Field Course - This course is a combination of classs review of key concepts and an extended field trip that will offer a direct exploration of some of the landscapes and environments that have shaped American culture. The program portfolio will be assembled. Hours: 1

ALPT143 Beginning Rock Climbing - This course acquaints you with the art of climbing movement and provides you with a basic foundation of skills and knowledge that you can build upon. You will learn the safety systems of knots, belaying and rappelling along with climbing techniques. Hours: 1

 

ALPT144 Intermediate Rock Climbing - This course will focus on the concepts of anchor stability, directionality, effectiveness, redundancy, equalization, and extension. You will practice building top rope climbing systems and then climbing on them after critique from your guide.

 

ALPT145 Lead Rock Climbing - This final course will develop selecting, placing and evaluating nut and cam placements on aid and while climbing. Between pitches we will practice and evaluate belay and stance set-up considerations and continually look at route selection and risk management. Hours: 1

 

ALPT146 Top Rope Anchors - Anchor class is designed to provide intensive top rope anchor instruction to Climbing graduates who wish to learn how to set their own top rope anchors and learn how to lead climb. Hours: 1

 

ALPT147 Efficient Climber’s Toolbox and Self-Rescue - This class is designed to increase the tools available to climbers across a wide spectrum of skill--‐sets. Safety in a multi--‐pitch or wilderness climbing environment depends upon having the skills available to apply to a particular set of problems to be solved. This class is designed to teach you several different ways of doing the same thing so that you will have a greater choice of skills to apply to any problem you face, ensuring a better chance of success. Hours: 1

 

ALPT233 River Reading - This course prepares those in river environments to interpret the environment safely. Hours: 1

 

ALPT234 Swift water Rescue 1 - This course prepares participants for defensive rescue situations involving floods and swift moving water. Any responder (Fire Service, Law Enforcement, EMS, Public Works, and Military) that will be conducting defensive rescues during a swift water or flood incident would benefit from this course. Hours: 1

 

ALPT243 Base-Managed Climbing Instructor - This course provides instructors and potential instructors with an in depth and standardized understanding of the skills essential to teaching climbing in an outdoor setting. Hours: 2

 

ALPT244 Top-Managed Climbing Instructor/Single Pitch Climbing Instructor - The program is for current, active rock climbers that have a real desire to teach the rock climbing to novices in a single pitch setting. Hours: 1

 

ALPT245 MULTI-PITCH CLIMBING - Offers the student the ability to go beyond single-pitch climbs and closer to distant summits or tall rock faces. The course is designed for climbers who want to expand their mental, physical and spiritual experience with rock climbing. Hours: 1

 

ALPT246 AVALANCHE TRAINING 1 (AIARE Level 1) - The AIARE Level 1 course is an introductory avalanche training course for professionals and recreational leaders. Hours: 1

 

ALPT247 AVALANCHE TRAINING 2 (AIARE Level 2) - The AIARE Level 2 course is an intermediate avalanche training course for professionals and recreational leaders. Hours: 2
