ETHPT 5501 PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH CARE & BIO ETHICS: 3 block hours each.
This 1st of 2 Professional courses will provide an overview of important ethical theories in bioethics. We will examine major works in the field by leading bioethics scholars to become better familiar with different approaches in the field. Key legal principles will be examined. At the end of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following outcomes: identify and analyze the ethical theories that undergird contemporary bioethics, become familiar with various theoretical approaches by leading bioethics scholars in the field, learn to apply critically these approaches, and develop a personal method of dealing with health care issues. The professional student will initiate the research phase of a Bioethics Thesis. Specific, evaluated professional-level activities and/or performances are identified in the syllabus. PREREQ: Professional Credential or student in Health Sciences.

This 1st of 2 Professional courses examine ethical issues that a health care provider encounters in the clinical environment. Interdisciplinary activities will be practiced. Practical approaches to challenging health care decisions will be emphasized. At the end of the course, participants should have developed and exercised high ethical standards in classroom and clinical settings; understood and minimized risks in the clinical setting; developed best practices in working with other professionals; and applying health care ethics theory in a practical manner such as when engaging patients, families, and other interested parties. The professional student will develop the clinical phase of a Bioethics Thesis. PREREQs: ETHPT 5501/2 or instructor permission.
ETHPT 5512 CLINICAL ETHICS THEORY & PRACTICE: 3 block hours each.

*ETHPT 5521/2 PROFESSIONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS: 3 block hours each.
These 2 Professional courses examine what it means to be a professional in an American organizational structure. The history and social expectations of the professions will be examined. The professions of doctor and nurse will be the focus. The development and management of the Ethics Committee will be offered. The professional student will develop the organizational phase of a Bioethics Thesis. PREREQs: None
ETHPT 5531/2 RESEARCH AND DELIVERY OF TREATMENT ETHICS: 2 block hours each.
These 2 Professional courses examine ethical issues in the research and delivery of health care products and technology. This course fulfills NIH requirements for Reasonable Research conduct. This course examines the pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies that partner with health care providers. The development and delivery of products and technology for health care will be assessed. At the end of this course, the participant will be able to understand and assess the flow from research to clinical use of products and technology; will be able to assess and develop effective policies for managing an effective interface between health care companies and the clinical setting; and be able to assess personal development of health care products and technology. The professional student will advance the research and writing phase of a Bioethics Thesis. PREREQs: ETHPT 5501/2
ETHPT 5541 BEGINNING AND END OF LIFE ETHICS: 3 block hours each.
This Professional courses examines ethical issues surrounding abortion and end-of-life care. Neonates and other vulnerable populations will also be included. A comprehensive examination of the legal and moral issues will be offered. Advanced directives—end of life documents such as living wills, durable Power of Attorney and Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment—will be assessed. At the end of the course, the participant will be expected to offer an understanding of the key positions that frame abortion and end-of-life debates; be able to explain to others the key features of end-of-life documentation; and apply quality decision-making skills to beginning-of-life and end-of-life decisions. PREREQ: None.
ETHPT 5551 BIOETHICS AND THE MEDIA: 3 block hours.
This professional course examines bioethics issues through the lens of the media (Movies, television, print media, and internet). Interdisciplinary perspectives will be encouraged. This course will assist the healthcare professional in using media tools in clinical settings. PREREQ: None.
ETHPT 5561 PUBLIC HEALTH ETHICS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE: 2 block hours.
This course serves to introduce a number of central concepts and key issues in public health ethics. Students will learn a number of basic frameworks for analyzing ethical issues in public health and how public health ethics differs from traditional medical ethics. Students will use a case-based approach to analyze a number of ethical issues in public health and practice applying the frameworks to numerous cases through assigned readings, in class discussion, and written assignments. PREREQ: None.
*ETHPT 5571/2 LEGAL ISSUES IN BIOETHICS: 3 block hours each.
An examination of the relationships between law and medicine, including reproduction, standards of care, medical neglect, end-of-life decisions, and definitions of transplantation and death. The ethical implications of the intersection of law and medicine will be critically analyzed. An awareness of the student's state laws relating to bioethics will be developed. PREREQ: None. ETHPT 5581/2 BIOETHICS AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICES & THOUGHT: 3
block hours each.
These 2 Professional courses explore fundamental themes, methods, and issues in religious bioethics. It seeks to determine the ways that religious approaches offer distinctive, complementary, or overlapping perspectives with secular approaches. Specific topics will include assisted reproductive technologies, family planning and abortion, genetic therapy and enhancement, withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, suicide and euthanasia, and justice issues in the allocation of health care resources. The course will combine lectures and discussions with the analysis of cases. PREREQ: None.
ETHPT 5583 CATHOLIC HEALTH CARE ETHICS: 2 block hours.
This course examines ethical issues in health care through the lens of Catholic moral thought. Students will first be introduced to the terminology and approaches of secular bioethics in order to understand similarities and differences between a secular and Catholic approach. Students will then explore theological foundations for health care ethics, including Christian anthropology and the meaning of the Christian life as it relates to issues that arise in health care. The course will engage specific teachings of the Catholic Moral tradition that bear directly on issues of health care ethics, including reproductive technologies, contraception, end-of-life decision making and physician-assisted suicide. While studying these issues, students will become familiar with differing, sometimes opposing, viewpoints and approaches of Catholic thinkers. A course format integrating lecture and active case discussion will provide both an understanding of principles and the opportunity to develop practical dilemma-solving skills. PREREQ: None.
ETHPT 5591/2 CLINICAL ETHICS INTERNSHIP / RESEARCH: 1 block hour each.
This course places the participant in a semester-long internship in Clinical Ethics. A bioethics research project will be developed. At the end of the course, the participant will have demonstrated practical application of bioethics theory in clinical settings; will have shown the ability to work as an effective interdisciplinary team member in the clinical setting; and offered a bioethics position paper that contributes to the field of bioethics.
